Re: So we took a road trip to the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta ..

I'm a charter member of The Aquarium of the Americas. I once went to Chicago to a pet industry trade show, and a bunch of us wanted to go to The Shedd. I went to the members desk and asked if they had any reciprocal discount agreements with other big aquariums. I showed them my charter member card, ...

Re: What's on my Tang?

It's viral, and called lymphocystis. Usually goes away in otherwise healthy tanks. In bad cases, we used to cut or pull it off, and paint the site with mercurochrome. There's probably a better answer today.

Is that that half-round thing that comes in a paper bank envelope? I thought it was called Magic Aquarium Ball or something.

Thank you, Sandy. Gerwin, the instructions about how to get a slideshow of your tank on the front page are, um... in the link under the slideshow on the front page.

Re: Red/Brown stuff on plants and rocks?

A bubble stone perhaps? Yes, anything that will agitate the surface of the water. Oxygen enters the water when the water's surface tension is broken due to atmospheric air pressure being greater than water pressure. It doesn't have to be strong bubbling. It also could be as little as redirecting a ...

Re: Holes in a perfectly good aquarium!!!

Ocean View is gone? Sorry, I'm out of the loop for several years. I have a 45 High (Domino) FW in storage that's on an OV solid oak cabinet and canopy that's extremely high quality. I don't know if the cab and canopy were actually production models, as I bought them as samples when OV was showing th...

Re: Holes in a perfectly good aquarium!!!

Of course, any warranty that the tank in question may have will undoubtedly be voided. But yes, great tutorial. I used to watch a local tank manufacturer drill custom holes in their shop, and, although they were always much smaller in diameter, the process was similar. They had some special metal ri...

Re: Red/Brown stuff on plants and rocks?

"Brown algae" is diatoms, common in new FW tanks. Too much nitrate, not enough light, no or not enough real plants competing for nutrients in tank water, no scavengers eating it. Regular partial water changes, better lighting, a plecostomus or algae eater or two, and also increased oxygena...

Re: Tell us about your tank

Step into the Wayback Machine: My tank is a 90 gallon saltwater. It's an O'Dell tank, because they're the best. I had a custom glass cover made with cut-outs in the glass itself for the Hagen 800 power heads-- no nasty salt leach between plastic and glass that way, and the hinge is fiberglas-reinfor...
