Re: Why won't my goldfish breed?
Don't get me wrong-- I know of a 80 gallon hex aquarium on the roof a warehouse that had black moors breeding like crazy in it (@American Pet, Gerwin). I also took in a pair of solid black FW angel fish on trade that spawned over night the first night I brought them home, and in a 20 gallon tank to ...

Re: The good, the bad, the ugly!
I once kept a 5 gallon salt tank for quite some time. It had a built-in UG filter, a piece of decorative coral, about 5 pounds of hair algae harvested from a 225 gallon tank, one bi-color angel, and the best 50 watt heater money could buy. That little bi-color thought he was in heaven. Having said t...

Re: Ich Spots
Other than the most delicate of butterflies, blue tangs/regal tang/flagtail surgeons have long been thought of as "ich prone". I once had a competing retailer drop off a whole box he was shipped by mistake gratis at a shop I worked at because he didn't want them in his tanks. On the other ...

Re: Why won't my goldfish breed?
Not enough room. Those same comets in a large pond should be 2-3 times that size after 3 years. A pond I saw the other day had comets succesfully breeding in it, but it was about 12' x 25' by 4' deep.

Re: CHECK YOUR HEATERS!!!!!
Less critical in an invertebrate-only tank, I would think. 2 degrees drop in under 24 hours on fish, I'd be looking for ich spots.

Re: DIY fish tank?
It's do-able, but there are several considerations: Correct thickness of glass for the volume and height, as well as sufficient bottom thickness for heavy decorations. Your glass cutting skill. Amount of silicone construction sealant in the seams-- too much is weak, as is too thin. Oceanic Systems m...

It will go more quickly and easily than it sounds, especially if the 55 is not going to go in the same spot the 29 is now. Even so, once the majority of water is out of the 29, even with the gravel still in it, two people can usually manage to pick it up just enough to kick a sheet of cardboard unde...

I get the impression that the 55 is replacing the 29, and not coming in as a second tank. If so, definitely utilize the bio-system you have already established in the 29 and move it, gravel, inhabitants and all to the new tank. I would go about it this way: Obtain 3 to 4 fishtank-use-only 5-gallon b...

Saltwater in the Long Ago #4: Modern Technology 1979
It didn't take genius to figure out that, once saltwater aquaria had come to the masses, that products would emerge professing to be the be-all to end-all in cutting-edge marine fish-keeping technology. The earliest I remember was "Dick Boyd's Chemi-Pure". It came ready-to-use in a nylon m...

Saltwater in the Long Ago #3: A Healthy Tank 1977
The biggest indicator that you were on track to a successful saltwater tank back then was a lush growth of green hair algae over every surface of your tank. Phosphates, though we knew nothing of their capabilities, were our friends. This presented a quandary, however, in that the natural coral skele...

Saltwater in the Long Ago #2: Settin' It Up, Breakin' It In
Now that you had all your hardware in place, you needed to "break it in". This was slang for establishing a colony of nitrifying bacteria in your undergravel filter. It typically took 4-6 weeks, and was a trying period for impatient new hobbyists. Typically, a 75 gallon system called for t...
