Lighting Question

I have seen metal halide reflectors mounted perpendicular to the canopy and I have seen some mounted parallel with the canopy. Is there a right way to mount them or is it personal choice?

Thanks
Luis

It's not the tablets. It is a test tube with liquid drops. I have a feeling it is accurate just because I did a side by side comparison with my tank water and my RO water. The tank water had 20 ppm and the RO water had 0.

Archie, I did a side by side comparison of tank water and the RO water. The RO water showed 0 nitrates. The tank has been set-up since May of 04. Right now, I have my return line using a SCWD (switching current water director) so I have a return in each back corner. I also have two power heads in th...

Lymphocystis

I just thought I would bring this up because my Naso Tang had it for a while and Gerwin told me about the disease and I was eventually able to help my Tang overcome it. Lymphocystis looks like cauliflower and is usually on the fins of a fish. It is not a life threatening disease and there are only a...

Metal Halides and Wooden Canopy

Hey all, I just got my metal halides in yesterday and mounted them in my wooden canopy. It is a dual 250w ballast, but I am running 175 watt bulbs right now. It looks a lot better.....but the wood on my canopy is warping when it heats up. Is there some type of spacer or flame resistant material that...

Okay..........I feed a variety of foods to include Omega One flakes, Formula Two flakes, Frozen Brine, Frozen Mysis, and Frozen Plankton. I also put in small pieces of Nori on a lettuce clip for the tang. I only feed once a day because the fish are all asleep and the lights are off when I leave for ...

Dropping Nitrates

How does one go about lowering nitrate levels? My current set up is a 100 gallon reef with approximately 150 pounds of live rock and a 3 inch live sand bed. I have 1 Naso Tang, 2 gobies, 4 chromis, and two clownfish. I am running a protein skimmer and a sump (no bio balls). Water changes are about 2...

Archie,

How big are these guys? Also, do you feed them? I hear that clams need to be fed when small, but as they grow they rely more and more on light. Last question.....what type of lighting do you keep them under? I am going to be getting one or two soon.

I don't feel that there is a best type of lighting out there as a whole. Obviously metal halides will get closest to natural sunlight......even though they are still far off. I think there is a best lighting scenario for individual tank set ups. The lighting you choose depends on what you want to ke...

Bio Balls, Good or Bad?

There is much controversy out there about Bio Balls and I have heard them called Nitrate factories. I recently removed mine and am using Live Rock for my biological filter. Are bio balls good when initially starting up a tank and trying to get the ammonia and nitrite levels down? At what point shoul...

Hola!

8) I am Luis and I started my reef tank in May of 2004. I have kept freshwater for many years and decided it was time to try something new. I gave saltwater a shot and have been very successful so far. I currently have a 100 gallon tank with a couple of soft corals and a few lps. I live in Biloxi, M...
