Re: What have you done for your tank this week?
Okay, this is actually what I did yesterday, but: I removed all of the corals and LR and put it into a kiddie pool in the middle of the floor and filled it with about 40g of tank water. I siphoned about 3.5g of water into a separate bucket and as I removed each piece of LR I would dunk it and wash i...

Few Items for Sale
Okay all. I've built my LED's and now I need to dump a few things. Here they are: Hamilton 250w HQI MH fixtures w/bulbs. Bulbs are about 6 months old and are Phoenix 20k. Included are three ballasts--two Hamiltons and one Lumatek variable--150w-HQI. All for $50. http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/e...

Re: Home made frag plugs
Not that the water shows, but I've not tested the pH which should be the only thing affected as PoP is insoluble in water. Even if it does break down PoP is CaSO4--Calcium Sulfate. It is actually gypsum that has been heated above 200 F and made anhydrous. When water is mixed with it, it gives off he...

Re: Home made frag plugs
One reason I'm also trying this is because, as you mentioned Scott, is the looks. I wouldn't mind plugs if they would encrust better but mostly because I had using the epoxy. I know it is all listed as reef safe, but I still have to wonder. Many skimmers freak out after using the stuff (Ask Pete), s...

Re: Home made frag plugs
The plug I made out of the PoP last Thursday has been sitting in water since about 30 minutes after I made it. Several times a day I swirl it in the cup to see if anything has happend, and nothing yet. The plug looks the same and there is nothing in the water (no cloudiness) or any particulate in th...

Re: Home made frag plugs
Hey G-man. I went ahead and have made one of the plugs. Looks good, took about 5 minutes and it's sitting in water right now checking to see if it dissolves. What the hell; one more thing for me to piddle with! Regardless of what happens, I've got some old live rock in the garage that I can get nugg...

Re: Problem Solved
Pete, of all of the things that we've discussed and thought of and scratched our heads over, I never in million years would have thought of the tank temp. I just ran with the assumption that is was fine. It just goes to show that the littlest things could be the most significant. Hope this gets you ...

Re: Home made frag plugs
Yeah, but plugs are ugly as hell. That's why I was wondering about making them as you could shape them into a more natural form etc. I already have the PoP for something we had (don't remember what). I'm going to make a few and put them in water and let them sit and see what happens. Never know--may...

True, but the ceramic looks like crap. That's why I was considering the thought.

Home made frag plugs
Just thinking to myself and was wondering if plaster of paris could be used to make frag plugs. They could be shaped into better designs that would blend in much better; shorter stems; larger or smaller bases etc. Has anyone ever tried this?
