Any idea what this is?

Post by Shannon » Wed Jul 26, 2006 12:49 pm

A friend of mine imported this betta from Thailand for me. Upon his arrival my friend noticed that one gill flap was larger than the other. There are no obvious parasites/flukes or any obvious injury. This fish is eating lightly and looks otherwise ok. Any ideas? He's been treated with Jungle Parasite for the last 10 days and just arrived in the mail to me today. He looks good except the enlargened gill cover is very obvious. Here are some pics, any ideas you have would be appreciated.

although these pics are nice, its really hard for me to see the gill plate..crystal clear and in relation to the other side. I think this is a case where bringing it by will probably be your best bet.

You mentioned in the store the other day he is eating and acting normal in every way, that and having been treated for parasites leads me to believe without seeing that it may just be a birth deformity.

He is a nice specimen. Is this a wild variaty or just juvenal.

On a side note I have seen articles on arowanas where the gill plates took unusual growth patterns and it is common practice to just take scissors and trim them back.

Again I really need to see the fish close up under diffrent angles and light sources.
