300 DD

Post by Shadow1 » Tue Feb 07, 2012 8:47 pm

Ordered a Marineland 300 deep dimension from Gerwin. So here goes parts list
Wes is building a custom 4 compartment Sump Top off about 110 gal
Return either dual mag drive 12's or TBD flow about 1700 gph
Skimmer will be a Diablo for now will upgrade if needed
Not sure if I need 2 MP60's or if a 2nd MP40 will do
Lighting 3 Radion's and 1 4 foot Pharos if needed till I can afford a 4th Radion
Calc and mag dosing
Carbon and phosban reactor
Moving about 200 lbs live rock from the 125
Tank will be located with full access to all 4 sides so there are some equipment placement issues
May get one of those cool backgrounds that Gerwin sells not sure kind of like the idea of full view.
Will post pics once the tank gets here.
Can the sand be used that is in the 125 about 1" seems it would help cycle new system.
I am open to ideas suggestions comments etc.
controllers have no idea how they work Do I need to look into one?
Enough for now will post pics once the tank arrives

Can't wait to see this come together, can't go wrong with Wes building the sump/ top off, if you decide you don't like the 110g sump, when its done, let me know, I can pull out the panels and use it as a display tank  . JMO here, you said the tank will be viewable from all 4 sides, I wouldn't put in one of those nifty backgrounds. A Marineland 300DD must be pretty wide, I would place the live rock down the middle of the tank and you could place corals on either side of the rock display and have a really nice looking walk around view of the tank. I know very little about controllers, even though I have bought one  for the new 150g tank. I am sure that having one on a 300g tank would only be a plus, I really wan't sure what these controllers were capable of doing until Scott informed me.

I would highly recommend the MP60 over the 40. More powerful with less noise. They seem to be better built and you will also need the extra flow for a tank that size anyhow. I love my twin mp60s on my 210.

G man says the tank is 3/4 weeks out so far
Marine land 300 Deep Dimension oak canopy and stand
3 radians and one Pharos for lighting
2 phosban 550 reactors
Elos ATO system
Diablo skimmer will add more later
About 300 pounds live rock some dead but....
2 Aquahouse dosing pumps
2 buckets Salinity Salt
160 pounds of sand
1 500 watt and 1 300 watt heater
Aquachiller 1hp
2 Mag 12's return pumps
1 mp40 and 1 mp60

The Wes sump design is perfect  for what I want but have to wait on it.
Will use a basic G Man sump for short term
The light combination is due to size of the tank 36x72 hoping to get 24x24 coverage from the Radion's and 12x48 from the Pharos that would leave min coverage at the corner overflows. Any suggestions ?
What am I missing :?:

I would really think about using all dead rock in the new tank.
http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/store/pro ... -rock.html
Nothing bad on the rock making it into your tank, And the price, $2.32 a pound, compaired to live rock, well, the savings would go a long way in paying for the lights over the tank. The only down side I have read in the several large tank builds with people using this rock, they say it leaches out some phosphates, a few water changes will take care oh that. I might think about holding off on getting the chiller also, till you see if you would really need it. JMO

Am using the live rock from my 125 system that is way overloaded at this point all rock and livestock is going to move to the new tank. Have been begining to aquire "dead rock" to work up new towers for the 300. I already have the chiller so it is just going to hang out till we decide we don't need it was amazing how hot a bunch of CF's will get a tank. the LED's make a real difference. My next real challenge is justifying a controller I really do not understand what they are capable of and associated cost of making them do their thing. I guess I am going to have to offer Scott Allen a Steak dinner or somethingt to sit and tell me all about how great an Apex is......

My electrician just left wants to make 2 dedicated 20 amp runs one for lights. Radions are rated at 3.5 amps each and I'm sure the Pharos is close to that. The second run will be for all the pumps fuge lights and skimmer. He wants at least a 15% overage on each line. Guess you can never have to much juice.

G man texted last nigh the stand and canopy came in unannounced. Rog is having to deal with them till I can get south. I hear they are too big to fit in the store. Will try to learn how to post pics tomorrow once we get stand home and located so we can see what it will look like.

Stand and Canopy no tank. Just as well can make 2 trips with just the truck rather than one big trip with trailor etc. Looks increadable in place Wife saw the canopy on the floor of the foyer and can't believe it is so big. SShe did not think the canopy sitting on a 12" riser was though. It's great to have a wife that likes the tannks as much or more than I do.

In going with the Radions (4) the Pharos and a pair of MP60's then add the cost of the tank, stand and canopy I am at 10 large I have put the sump build on hold till I can recoup financially. Going to use an aqueon 3 overflowing into a 40 gal Breeder with a 30 gal tank for top off for now. Will build the sump probably by Christmas.
