Evaporation
I have a 75g w/20g sump. I lose about 1- 1 1/2 gallons a day. Is this normal?

Re: Evaporation
That depends really, how much flow and surface disruption do you have and what temp do you run your tank. Is your tank covered?
1 1/2 gallons sounds a little high to me, my tank doesn't Evap that much and I'm almost 2.5 times your volume. I'd check to make sure the subfloor isn't wet or the inside of your stand isn't wet just to be safe.

Re: Evaporation
I'm sure you don't have a leak. Is your AC on? Do you have fans? If their was a leak of that volume I think you'd have already stepped in the water. Not a bad idea to check.

Re: Evaporation
Tank has a canopy but it's just around the sides, only half the top and back is open. No leaks anywhere first thing I checked. Not a whole lot of surface disruption. Tank runs around 76-78. No fans. The return pump line is 3/4 ID flex line and I run a ball valve about 5/8 open.

Re: Evaporation
That sounds like a lot of evaporation for your setup, what causes higher Evap is a lot of surface disruption and higher velocity of air moving across the surface of the water. When one of my tanks leaked, the floor around it seemed dry. I had to pull the carpet up by it, and check under the sponge under the carpet and it was soaked. Also, in my house when my frag tank overflowed, the water went under my hardwood and actually seeped up through the hardwood in a totally different room. All around the tank seemed dry.
I have a 5.5 x 2 ft surface area on my display, a 3 x 2 area on my sump, and a 2.5 x 1 ft area on my frag tank. My tank temp is maintained at 78 degrees and I have a ton of surface disruption. 10000gph in display and 3000 in 20 gallon frag tank. I have to add four gallons to my ATO reservoir every four days or so. When I had a leak in my old 150 I had to add it every two to three days.
Watch your salinity, if it is dropping you have a slow leak.

I wouldn't worry about it anymore.

Re: Evaporation
My 300DD was going thru close to 5 gallons a day evap, 2 MP60,s 2 MP 40's and 2 Mag 12's for return all wide open. the BAT 375 gal system with covers is going thru less than a gallon a day same flow.

Re: Evaporation
I have more evap during the winter than in the summer it seems. I'm figuring it's the fireplaces, tank heaters, or just the warmer dryer air being blown from the vents.
