beginner fish

looking at getting a 55 gallon tank and i was wondering what would be the best fish to begin at and learn. i would like to do a just fish with live rock tank in this tank

Damsels are very easy but you will likely end up not wanting them in the long run.

Once your live rock cures and your system stabilizes:

Clownfish
Most wrasses
Blennies
Cardinals
Hawkfish
And many inverts like shrimp, urchins

More difficult fish like angels and tangs will be very aggressive in a 55g and out grow it in the long run.

phisher gives some solid info. but the long run can be a very very long time for many species of Angel and Tangs and even the ones that grow large, rarely get the chance to get there (unfortunately in the aquarium). I would love it if everyone kept their fish till they reached max size, most of the popular ones tend to be pretty tank compatible for many years.
When I hear that statement, I always say "we can deal with that when we get there"......I have lots of places that would love big fish if they out grow someones aquarium
