Overflows

Post by Grand Bay Reef » Fri Feb 04, 2011 5:15 pm

Has anyone ever used or heard of a Calfo Overflow set up. He is a link to the info that found and it really intrigued me.

I'm getting real busy on my tank swap this weekend and thought about using this.

Thanks
Ron

I have heard and read a little about them on RC, but never used. Like every thing else people swear by them and say that if you aren't using them then your house will flood with 5,800 inches of water out of your nano-cube! I have looked at the design and it does make sense, but it is more complicated than a standard type so this means more parts to put together and more parts to have problems. This design is supposed to be very quite because you can fine-tune it. One thing I do truly like and think is great is the coast-to-coast overflow. The thinner the layer of water that you can skim the more effective it is at gas exchange (greater area of surface tension disturbed), scum/funk/film removal, and the quieter it is because of no waterfall effect. Take the reef tank in the shop--very quite.

so what questions can I answer?
1. Is it as fail safe as the article states?

2. Is the benifits worth the extra drilling?

no better than the standard overflow box imo
the biggest benefit is more surface skimming the "surface", which means more potential protein being delivered to skimmer

correction I meant to say no more "fail safe" then the standard, fail safe by my definition is making sure you do not flood the house! the cali flow or traditional have less to do with the design for such fail safe and more to proper placement of siphon breaks on pump returns and a few simple things to make sure your drain hole does not get plugged, we all know how we hate our drain hole getting plugged
