My SetUp: AGA 150g 48x30x25, Reef Octopus Skimmer, Bio Pellet, Phosphate, Carbon reactor. Mostly a SPS coral tank with a few zoas a Green Polyp Toadstool, a Chalice or two and a couple of Scollys thrown in there. Top Off System and dosing pump system for Calcium and Alk.

:roll: The wife had decided that she wants to paint the living room before the holidays, walls and ceilings. What precautions should I be tanking with the tank?

My SetUp: 230 Gallon Tank w/ 60 gallon sump
Manta Ray pump running my 4 returns and protein skimmer. 2-3" live sand bed with 230 pounds of some live rock. RO/DI system for water changes and auto top off. 57 watt UV sterilizer. 2 stage phosphate and carbon reactor. T5 lights at the moment but soon to be LEDs. Need better paying job.

you should prob just sell me everything for really cheap and then ill let it grow out and frag you some pieces when you get everything around the house in order. sound good?

:lol: For you maybe :lol: The tank has a canopy over it, so paint shouldn't be able to get into the tank water, I wouldn't think that paint fumes would cause any problems or would they?

Buy and use low VOC latex water-based paint (assuming that's what's already on your walls and ceiling). Cover the tank with plastic or whatever to keep paint from physically dropping on it while painting. Shut off air pumps while painting and for a few hours thereafter. Open windows and ventilate room while painting and for a few hours thereafter.

And be sure to run FRESH GAC. That will absorb anything that may get in the tank as well.

IIRC, all new activated carbon may effect an undesirable rapid pH change.

painted many times never a worry for me, but all the advice given is good to follow if you wanna be extra cautious

Changing out activated carbon for all new used to be a concern because it can raise pH. Maybe we were worried about it in FW tanks more than SW.

Gotcha. I don't think it's a problem anymore since it is so pure now. I would imagine that at one time the impurities left would cause that, but GAC should be completely neutral. I need to test that. If I remember to bring a probe home (or a sample here to work) I will let everyone know what I find.
