help ID fish caught off long beach peir...

Post by bcarleton » Sun Aug 05, 2012 7:52 pm

Didnot have my camera with me to get pic, but hopefully I can describe what i caught well enough. Fish had body shape like bass or grouper. Color was very dark maroon with a copper base. Had some small conical teeth. any ideas? i first thought off mangrove snapper, but pics that i have found online dont look close enough. Wish I had a native tank set up, this fish would have been brought home.

If it was small I'm sure it was a gray snapper (mangrove). The juveniles (seen a lot inshore) are much more vibrantly colored than adults. Without a pic though it's just a professional guess.
