free macro algae.

hey I have a pretty good little bit of macro algae chalupera and cheatomorph if anyone wants some. this stuff grows like crazy in both of my tanks, it has also done wonders for my water quality!!! gerwin i noticed you dont sell this stuff in your store would you like some? Let me know. i need to trim some out i would rather give it to someone instead of throwing it away.

Do you keep it in your sump or in your tank? If you keep it in your sump, what kind of light do you use for it? I would like to have some if you still have some. Tried it over a year ago, would like to give it a try again since I have things set up different now. Let me know what I need to do to get some if you have any left.

Hello sandy. I have it in 2 different tanks, in my biocube 29 I keep it rubber banded to a rock in the tank. On my 90 gal I keep it in the sump.
As for the lighting I tried the simple route which was recommended by Dr.G at our favorite LFS. I bought one of little clip work light fixtures the ones with the little 6 or 8" roud metal reflectors, and a CFL 6500k 100w equivalent which I think is like 23 watts or something, it’s the little swirly looking light bulbs. (On a side note I changed every bulb in my apt to those swirly cfl bulbs and my power bill dropped 10-13 dollars and has stayed that low ever since.) Back to the macro algae I leave the light in the sump on all of the time, to prevent/delay the chalupra from going sexual and releasing all of the toxins back into the water. The bulb is around 7.00 and the little clip fixture is 9.00 at lows. I have heard of people having success with LED lights too. I think as long as it is between 5500-10000 k range you will be fine, I have read on some sites that around 5500k is best but the 6500k cfl's that they sell in the stores seem to work GREAT!! I love the macro algae in my bc29 it totally stabilized my water. Sometimes my nitrates would get up to 10-20 and sometimes I had a little phosphate too. After adding that stuff everything immediately went to 0 and stayed there.

I would definitely like to have some. I will keep it in my sump. I have one of those reflectors, I can't remember what kind of bulb I have. I will have to check. I had heard that keeping micro algae somewhere in your tank or sump would help keep other nuisance algaes down. Has anyone else heard this? I will pm you my number. Thanks for the info.

I would like some also, but I am going to wait till I get a refugium set up for the tank. I got some from our LFS, but it kinda disappeared in my sump, to much water movement in the sump I think.
