My 75 SPS

Post by phisher » Wed Sep 08, 2010 3:58 pm

I am not much of a "blogger" but I would like to try and keep some updates going for myself if no one else.

I started this adventure back in summer 2009. I was coming back from extreme reefing burn-out brought on largely by hurricane Katrina. Most of my reef tank buddies took heavy losses (as did I) and got out of the hobby. We were able to keep most of our fish alive despite almost 3 weeks without electricity. Some of our fish have been with us almost 10 years and I just did not have the heart to give them away so I maintained an over crowded 50g tank until being re-invigorated into the hobby.

The original idea for this was going to be my ultimate (yet small) sps tank with all the bells and whistles. Originally I was going to have a custom tank made but decided a standard glass 75 would fit the bill. I do not like most of the prefab stands I have seem so I planned a custom oak unit to match my existing decor. The build thread is here: viewtopic.php?f=10&t=138 so I am not going to it here. Most of my build info and equipment is there as well.

After many, many delays and issues real and imagined I got water in the tank in June 2010. Original aquascaping had minimal live rock. The rock was from my existing set up, thus purple and pre-cured.

As I began adding frags...I needed more places for them, so towards the end of July I added about 25lb more live rock and re-scaped.

Without pulling them out and looking I can't remember exactly. I am using Giesman (sp) bulbs...I think 2 act blue, 2 act white and 1 day light is the combo.

With corals and such he's been no problem. He will eat any of my clean up crew he takes a fancy to.
