Large clam transport

Post by Scott Allen » Sun Aug 07, 2011 10:48 am

I found a guy on craigslist that is breaking down his large tank. He is have an open house on Wednesday to sell off the contents. I spoke to him about 2-3 months ago and was able to reserve his 12" or so Squamosa Clam...

How do I transport a clam of this size from Slidell to gulfport?

And, he has a ton of zoa/palythoas,(and a lot more, mostly softies hard to tell from the pic he gave me) and live rock for sale if anyone wants to go to the open house with me on Wednesday (it's from 3 till later, i'm going at 3). I'm sure he would appreciate a crowd to help him clear the tank before moving.

Go buy one of those mid size coolers and then just commit it to fish stuff. :D

That's what I was thinking too

on the water for transport
Could I mix fresh salt water? and bring it home in totally new water?
Or should I do a change on my tank at home and use that water?
How important is it that i match water parameters outside of salinity?

I don't really know what the right answer on the water would be. Maybe if you did a water change in your tank, saving the old water using it to fill your cooler. Then when you get there to pick up the clam, you could acclimate the clam into the cooler with your tank water. Then when you get home, acclimate the clam into your tank water. :wtf: :wtf: Does any of this make since?? :wtf:  Maybe Gerwin will chime in with his wisdom, tell me I am clueless, and then tell you the right way to do it!

What should I look for in terms of overall health of the specimen and pests?

I know responsiveness is very important. What else?
