co2 scrubber for protein skimmer raises ph?

Post by Gz28 » Fri Nov 13, 2009 6:39 pm

Ok i have a couple of questions about something i saw online http://www.aquariumspecialty.com/catalo ... ts_id=5898
The origional site i found this on had a list of water parameters all perfect and ph 7.8 and asked if that looked familiar of course i clicked on it because yes it looked very familiar to me!! i know, i know gerwin quit stressing about 7.8 its not that bad... but i am just a curious person. ok so apparently they say if you get the co2 scrubber and hook in the air liine of your skimmer it will increase the ph. is this true?
they also mentioned that the whole ph of 7.8 thing is especially common with people with central air and heat because not as much fresh air gets into the house and co2 levels are a little higher. ok i experminted with that. i opened the hood of my 29g nano tank opened the door for most of the night and but a fan outside the door blowing fresh air into the house and directly onto the tank. i had a reverse action instead of my ph being the normal 7.6-7.7 at night. i watched it slowly drop throughout the rest of the night from 7.6 to 7.4 then i closed the front door and tank. that is the first time the ph ever got that low....any idea's as to why that might have happened.
water paramters at that were as follows.
salinity 1.024
phosphate,ammonia,nitrite,nitrate all 0 ppm
dkh 10
calcium 380

DONT GO OUTSIDE you may suffocate....am I being to comical
? cant help these are the things that pop in my mind first.

I read it I get what they are saying but I do not know of anyone who has had to buy one to tell you yeah or no. It claimed to make a change of .05-.2something, but that is not enough to me as the low will not make a difference and that would be my luck . The min rise would have to be at least .4 by your numbers.
I still advocate more aeration to the tank via pumps or water movement up top. Liberate that CO2 .

I noticed something interesting today. My protein skimmer has been out of commission for about a week now, i checked my ph at night at the same time i check it all of the time when i check it at night. my ph was 8.13 it is usually 7.8 at night and 7.9 in the daytime. Maybe it is related to the skimmer maybe not, I will be experimenting on this!! it does make me think that maybe there is something to that article i read about the co2 scrubber.
I had a conversation with gerwin a little while ago about carbon effecting the ph because if i remember this right, when i quit replacing the carbon the ph went up a couple of tenths and stayed there. i havent replaced my carbon since that conversation and the ph has been very steady at the elevated levels. I am not really worried about the ph anymore because my tank is so succesful, I am just really curious about this little problem. What do you think gerwin?

not sure as I have never used the co2 scrubber,
aeration should liberate co2 there for raising ph, use of a good activated carbon should also have positive results on moving it up opposed to moving it down as improved water quality results.
