New Tank, sort of

Post by Redfish » Wed Dec 16, 2009 9:18 pm

Well, new to me lol. I bought a new used tank tonight its a 180g tank 72x24x24. I got a really good deal on the tank, stand and canopy. I will have to wait till the owners sell off the fish, corals and live rock before I can get the tank. Also, almost forgot, this tank has two corner overflows (keep that in mind for the equipment I need to get Gerwin) I need to get a sump, skimmer, its not a closed loop tank so I will need something to circulate the water in the tank. Gerwin, will the the ones I have in my 125 be good enough or do I need a couple more or bigger ones? What about my return pump that I have in my 125 from my sump to the tank, big enough or not?
Here Is a link to a pic of the tank, not sure this will work or not.

This is the link to their for sale thread, they are going to repost their equipment for sale with ind. prices, if they start a new thread I will post that for ya'll. They live a pretty good piece from here, on the other side of Mobile. Been their one time. I will most likely use the stand and canopy as a pattern and rebuild them  . I would like a canopy with a hinge in the front so that I can tilt it back, maybe put a hinge on the back also to tilt the backside of the canopy ( :? not sure about the back hinge lol :? ) I could run my light ballast right down the middle of the two hinges. Anyway, if I am going to redo the canopy, I might as well do the stand so that I can stain them just alike. I have some ideas about the stand also, won't give those ideas away yet though. Sandy, you have no room in your tank for anymore corals  :D :)

That's what Lloyd keeps telling me! But I manage to make room here and there.
I'm a pretty good packer,,,, 10 pounds of crap in a 2 pound bag!!!
So I can probably find room for a few more. Maybe?

looks like a old school ocean view aquarium(because of corner overflows) they went to 2 sided corners awhile back. That is definitely one of their cabinets.
As far as flow and water pumps you are going to have to remind me what you have now as I forget what everyone has bought over the months. I have a 75 sump (used) lmk if you are interested.

I might be interested in the 75g sump. I don't no the configuration of it but will talk to you about it. I kinda want to put a deep sand bed and some of that, what ever you call it, the grass stuff, in the same chamber. What I would like if you give me the ok is, the drain from my tank on one end, the deep sand bed on the other end and the skimmer and return pump in the middle, unless we go with an outside the sump return pump, what ever you think.

The deal for the 180 has fell thru, so my plans have changed. I am going to start buying all of the equipment for a new tank and when all of the equipment has been bought I will order the tank. The new tank will be 60x30x25, I want the 60 inch long so that I can build my stand longer and mount a QT/frag tank next to the DT. Do they make tanks this size with just one corner over flow in the tank? I want an in tank over flow but just one not two, all of the tanks pics I have seen of tanks this size have had two in tank over flows, I want to cut down on the plumbing as much as I can. I will have enough plumbing as it is because I want a refugium in what will be a large sump. What I want to do is raise the QT/Frag tank on the end of the stand up so that it will give me a taller amount of room under the stand on that end so that I will have room to put in a taller skimmer if need be, not sure if that extra room would be needed for the skimmer or not but I could use the extra room for a auto water top off container. And no, I can't get a 36inch wide tank, my front door is only 35inches wide, lol. The first thing on the buy list will two Vortech pumps to circulate the water in the tank, these are being placed first on my list so that I will not be tempted to go with a cheaper pump at a later date to speed up getting the tank set up.

I should have all your price requests next week Pete
and actually you turn the tank on its side (24") and it will go through the door fine

60x30x24 is not standard but having it made is no big deal, its actually the size I wanted but lack of patience led me to the 60x24x30 that I have today. I will say tall tanks look more impressive but are more difficult to work on. As far as one overflow no problem there, although there are good arguments suggesting max. overflow area to increase protein surface skimming to be delivered to your foam fractionator

I am most likely going with the 72x30x24, just wanted to know my choices on the other tanks. I didn't know if ( You) could turn them on the side to get them in the door. Seems like it would put alot of preasure on the one side of the tank. I have a few other prices from some companies, we will see what the new company comes in with. My wifes son said he will make the stand and canopy for me, 8) :D , I told him if he did that he might get some stand and canopy building bussiness, not counting my 125g tank, lol. He used to work for Grimes Cabnets, soooo, he has some skills.
