Re: Lionfish
i hope that they dont overdo it with these derbies, it would be a shame to see the population reduced to point of extinction.

Re: Lionfish
Not sure If my other post made it on, or what, but I will try this again. Okay everyone listen very closely---LIONFISH ARE INVASIVE!!! They are from the Indo-Pacific. Pray that they eat/ kill them all over here or we are in big trouble
. Now, before someone thinks I'm an alarmist, Gerwin can tell you I'm not--we've spoke on some issues and he knows how I stand. Anyway, lionfish entered the Atlantic around Miami from two sources---irresponsible aqaurists (dumping them when they outgrew their tank)
and hurrican Andrew (released from a destroyed house). Lionfish have NO natural predators here in the Atlantic/ Carribean/ Gulf so their population has exploded. Even sharks won't eat them. Because of this they act like little vaccum cleaners and wipe out reefs. Some estimates put the population densities at 800 times their native range. If my other post doesn't make it on, I will try and post a PowerPoint showing the range expansion and some other data.
Yes they are a beautiful fish and I like them as well--just in their native range. I know all of you fine folks here are and do, but just a reminder to practice responsible aquarium practices. Before you make a purchase learn about the species and know if it will outgrow your tank. If it does, you will need to find a new glass home for it but DO NOT RELEASE IT LOCALLY.
Thanks for listening to my soapbox and if anyone has any questions regarding invasive species locally I will be glad to answer them. Can anyone say Pacu, Zebra mussels or Giant Salvinia?

Re: Lionfish
LOL! I've just seen first hand how introduced species have affected our local environment. I would recommend grilling with a lime glaze though!!!

Re: Lionfish
I think they would be pretty tasty with a little butter, garlic, lemon juice, parsley, and topped with fresh crab meat. YUM YUM!!!
